The Soft Credit Check, Explained

Cherry uses a soft inquiry to review your credit profile. Soft inquiries are visible only to you — other lenders never see them, and they have absolutely no effect on your credit score. You can check your rate with Cherry as many times as you like without any consequence, which makes it safe to see your options before committing.

This is fundamentally different from applying for a credit card or personal loan, where a hard inquiry typically shaves a few points off your score and stays on your report for two years. With Cherry, the only credit reporting that happens is after you accept a plan: your payment history is reported to Equifax, so consistent on-time payments can help strengthen your credit over the life of your plan.

Tips to Improve Your Approval Odds

1. Request a realistic amount. Asking for $2,000 when you need $1,500 lowers your odds. Approvals scale with your profile.

2. Pay down credit card balances first. High utilization is the most common reason for reduced approval amounts.

3. Make sure your credit file is thawed. If you have frozen your credit with the bureaus, temporarily lift the freeze before applying — a frozen file cannot be reviewed and will result in automatic denial.

4. Use accurate personal details. Mismatched names, addresses, or SSN typos trigger identity-verification failures far more often than credit issues do.

5. Reapply after 60 days if denied. Denials are not permanent. If your utilization drops or a collection clears, your next application can succeed.
